150 Lessons Learned at 50

Begin with the end in mind.

Apart from Jesus I can do nothing. Abide in the Vine.

Without faith it is impossible to please God.

Faith without works is dead.

You don’t need the faith to finish. You need the faith to start. 

You have to meet the need before you can plant the seed.

True religion takes care or orphans and widows.

Trust and obey. 

Faith pushes through and hope pulls us across as God’s love guides through uncertainty. Fear pulls us back and doubt pushes against us as Satan’s lies tempt us to live comfortable lives.

God never calls you to your comfort zone.

All things work together for good for those called according to His purposes.

We must trust in the Lord with all of our heart and lean not on our own understanding as we acknowledge Him in all our ways, He will direct our path.

Not by might. Not by power but by my Spirit says the Lord.

Jesus, plus nothing.

You don’t have to get cleaned up to take a bath. Jesus will take you right where you are but He loves you too much to leave you there.

Saul believed his own press and fell. Solomon gave into the world and failed to end strong. David learned from his mistakes and asked the Lord for advice and never lost a battle. 

David, not Goliath, was the real giant.

Pride comes before the fall.

Both your friends and enemies help define you.

Those who can’t be big, belittle. 

Stand for something or you will fall for anything.

I wish for you not wealth but generosity.

If we ask for wisdom He will give it. 

Communicate. Collaborate. Celebrate.

We must practice His presence.

Pray without ceasing.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. 

Work like it depends on you. Pray like it depends on God.

No man is self-made. Every man owes someone for the power of personal influence. 

When the student is ready the teacher will appear.

Women are smarter than men.

A smile is a smile in any language.

Come once and you are a visitor. Come twice and you are a friend. Come a third time and you are family.

Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.

Love your wife. Kids grow up and move away. 

Marriages don’t break up they drift apart.

Selfishness is at the root of most relationship problems.

Conflict is inevitable.

An informed mind makes the best decision. 

Repetition over time equals success. 

Great organizations fail from implosion not explosion.

Make sure the devil knows your name.

Figures lie and liars figure.

Don’t just see, notice.

Great leaders serve.

Don’t take yourself too seriously. Laugh at yourself. 

Better to remain silent and thought to be a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

God gave you two ears and one mouth. Listen twice as much as you talk.

I’d rather try and fail than try nothing and succeed.

The best lessons are caught not taught.

Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger,

Don’t drive Miss Daisy. Women have been the downfall of many good men.

Behind every great man is an even better woman.

Obedience is its own reward.

Think before you speak.

There is wisdom in an abundance of counsel.

God is love. See God. See love.

Leaders take initiative. 

Lies and laziness lead nowhere.

There is no magic in prayer, just power!

Nobody is perfect.

Jesus loves me.

Expect the best.

You find what you are looking for. Are you a bee or a butterfly?

Life is short. Work hard and have fun.

You have to rest to be your best.

No one ever said on his or her deathbed, “I wish I would have had more time at the office.”

Anger is often triggered by fear, frustration, food, fatigue, frigidity and pharmaceuticals.

Communication is the key to marriage.

Admit when you are wrong.

Saying I am sorry is often one of the best ways to say I love you.

Satan is the father of lies.

A bulldog can whip a skunk but is it really worth the stink? 

Your greatest strength can become your greatest weakness when not under control.

Problems are the seeds of opportunity. 

Anyone can count the number of seeds in an apple but no one knows the number of apples in a seed.

The more we take the less we become. The more we give the more we have.

Those who hurry to worry often delay to pray.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Don’t let your future be held hostage by your past.

Hug longer. Show more mercy. Give more grace and love always.

My kids got their good looks from me because their mother still has hers!

Stay in school.

The Church is a body not a building.

Jesus wasn’t a Christian. 

Religion divides but if Jesus is lifted up, He will draw all men to Himself.

The best don’t always win.

Rejection is protection.

Anyone can be a great winner. It takes a real champion to be a great loser.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

The Bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from the Bible.

The Lord speaks to us through our knowledge of His Word. 

Be still and know … He is God.

Dog spelt backwards is still a man’s best friend.

I see no benefit, but only huge risk, in the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Know God, know peace. No God. No peace.

Peace and His presence are proportionate.

People will let you down and mislead you that is why Jesus said follow me. He never said follow men.

Silence is agreement.

Leave things better than you found them.

Honesty is the best policy.

Little things make a big difference.

Under promise and over deliver. 

There is no guarantee of comfort in a calling.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. 

Success without significance is no success at all. 

Never let a loser tell you how to win.

Failing doesn’t make you a failure.

Put people over projects

He who is a real hero is first one at home.

Become a student of people. 

Critique ideas not identities. Question methods not motives. Criticize projects not people. 

I heard and I forgot. I saw and I remembered. I did and I understood.

No pain. No gain.

God never wastes pain.

If it were easy anyone could do it. 

God is never in a hurry and He doesn’t wear a watch.

Where God guides, He provides. He pays for what he orders.

No one can do everything but everyone can do something.

“God does not create poverty; it is created by you and I because we don’t share.” – – Mother Teresa

When you invite God into your work, your work becomes worship.

If you think about it, pray about it.

In order to be effective, short-term missions require long-term commitments.

Brevity is our friend.

Better to leave early than to stay to long. 

To be early is to be on time.

Love is a commitment.

Inspect what you expect. 

There is no I in Team.

What gets inspected is what gets done.

Trust but verify.

Measure twice, cut once.

Language defines culture.

Fail fast and fail early.

Often, less is more and bigger isn’t always better. 

A friend steps in when the rest of the world steps out.

Love is attractive.

Never under estimate the need for a woman of any age to feel pretty.

A good reputation can take a lifetime to build and be lost in an instance.

Philosophy is one man’s thoughts on another man’s thinking.

Are you willing to put your name on it? Even more so, His.

Character is who you are when no one is watching.

Eat right and exercise. 

You’ve got to have a physical body to have a spiritual ministry.

Love God. Love others. Be the moon, reflect the Son.
