My Plans

The ocean speaks to me. The message is consistent, familiar, inspiring, calming and peaceful. Today it was reassuring.

A friend once asked me if I thought God could get my attention if he wanted to. Would he care to communicate with one mortal among billions?

I don’t consider myself privileged, special or particularly unique. Some would even say I’m just an average guy, taking his time and working his way through life.

But like most of us, I often find myself looking for signs that there is more to life. What waits beyond the edge of the universe as stars dance in the darkness of the night and the moon reflects on the deep blue sea and the sun is chased away to find the start of another day.

Simple as I am, I have made a discovery. God speaks. He speaks through his creation, he speaks through people, he speaks through circumstances, events, pain, pleasure, his word and through our hearts, souls and minds. When we seek him, listen for him and watch for him, he speaks.

I started my day reflecting during a time of devotion. Personal revelation, was the message that made its way into my thoughts. The idea that God desires to get our attention. He wants to reveal his heart, his ways and his plans for our lives.

The verse in Jeremiah 29:11 came to mind, “I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

As a new year brings new opportunities, I couldn’t help but wonder what the future might hold. My mind couldn’t resist but to begin planning what might be. I recognized there would be risks, courage would be needed and faith would be required to see me through.

I found myself once again being reminded of Proverbs 16:9, “We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.”

With that in mind, I closed my devotion and headed out for a peaceful stroll along a freshly groomed beach that had resulted from a night of rain and high tides. The sand was smooth and pristine. It was exceptional.

There on the horizon of the shoreline a heart shaped stone caught my eye. It was nestled in the sand as the tide washed in and out over its surface.

Sea shells, driftwood and an occasional seagull feather are more common discoveries. Normally, I would pass on a rock held hostage by the sea but I felt prompted to take a closer look.

I reached down and to my surprise, there was a message written on the surface of the stone.

I had heard of messages in a bottle but a message on a stone? What I read took my breath away, “My Plans.” I stood in amazement as the points from my recent devotion rushed through my mind!

Whose plans? My plans? The author’s plans? God’s plans? I was taken by the sheer coincidence of it all. Coincidence? I think not.

There are times in life when the planets just seem to align. You find yourself at the right place at the right time and the Creator speaks.

It can’t be denied. He spoke to me on the beach today. He sent me a message out of the depths of the billowing sea. He provided me with a simple stone with a simple message, “Trust, my plans.”

Yes Lord, your plans. You are my rock. My foundation. I will not build my life around sinking sand but upon the rock of my salvation. You continue to ask me, “Do you want my plans or your plans?”

I am listening Lord. Thank you for speaking. Thank you for revealing yourself in so many different ways. You are truly a creative communicator. You have a way of gaining our attention in more ways than one as we have eyes to see and ears to hear the plans you have for us.

My heart and mind are open to your ways. I am an ordinary man but my heart is full and looks to tomorrow with great expectation and unique communication from above!
