Have you ever wondered if the Lord might be trying to get your attention?

Intuitively we tend to think hearing the Lord would be a powerful and dramatic experience.

When Elijah was seeking divine communication he discovered the Lord in perhaps the most unexpected way.

1 Kings 19:11-14 (NLT)

“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” The Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Did you catch it? The Lord spoke in a gentle whisper. Just how gentle? Isaiah 18:4 gives us a clue as to just how soft spoken the Lord is.

Isaiah 18:4 (NLT)

For the Lord has told me this: “I will watch quietly from my dwelling place— as quietly as the heat rises on a summer day, or as the morning dew forms during the harvest.”

Pretty quiet huh? As quiet as the heat rising and the dew falling.

When you are the Lord, you don’t have to raise your voice. When you are God, who you are speaks for itself.

We tend to look for the Lord in the spectacular when in reality He is communicating to us through even the most simplest of things.

Shhh… listen the Lord is speaking. Draw closer child. Your Heavenly Father wants to whisper in your ear. He loves to have you close to Him.

The sons of Korah learned to listen well. Why else would they have penned Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.”

It is in the stillness where we find God. In a hurried, fast paced world it is easy to blow past the gentle whispers that attempt to woo us into the presence of God. If we seek Him we will find Him. Surprisingly, we may come to find Him where we already are. Be still and you will find Him there.
